Pat Cunningham's argument for censoring the student press at public universities is deeply flawed. Courts have repeatedly denied government officials the right to censor newspapers. And as I detail on my website, www.collegefreedom.org, Governors State University's own policies gave total control of the newspaper's content to student editors. However, apart from legal rights, as a journalist Cunningham ought to recognize the moral right to oppose censorship. No publisher, whether it is a private company or a public university, ought to censor a newspaper.
